G8 Nuclear Conference

MOSCOW -- Senior nuclear officials from the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations gathered in town Thursday to discuss ways to ensure the safe use of atomic energy.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Committee chairman Nils Diaz is chairing the two-day conference, which is being attended by representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Union and other organizations.

Diaz told Nezavisimaya Gazeta that the conference would focus on the activities of nuclear regulators to make sure they have enough power and independence to oversee the nuclear industry.
