Michael97123. I agree with you that McCain is a patriot. I do not think that he is a unifying figure. He carries his own baggage.

Nor do I think that there is any chance at all that Cheney will drop off the ticket. He is in for the duration and that is probably all to the good re: Republican victory prospects. Cheney's leaving, unless forced by the heart issue, would disturb many Republicans who are ardent Bush/Cheney fans. Neither Bush nor Cheney nor the Republican powers-that-be are anxious to disturb a winning combination.

As for Cheney's remarks to Leakey, I think Cheney showed remarkable restraint given the provocation. And I also think that Cheney knew in his deeper parts that his remarks would resound well in the electorate. That is to say, Cheney's little bit of off-color verbiage will win him and Bush more votes in the hinter-land than are likely to be lost to the Blue Noses.

So, my opinion is that you will get more of the same between now and November from the Bush/Cheney ticket. The ticket will remain intact. After all, too many bumper stickers have been printed. Why go to the expense of printing different ones now.
