There is an inherent conflict between the teachings of the Catholic Church on abortion and the demands made on politicians to accomodate certain constituents. [edit: they also, if required, have the obligation to uphold the law even if the Church disagrees with the law]. I agree, if a politician runs on a platform, wins and sticks to his/her positions, their constituents should be happy. If, however, that platform goes against what their religion teaches, they should be prepared for criticism and even excommnication from that church. Lots of people (not just politicians) want it both ways. The Catholic Church lately is saying you can't have it, you have to pick one. Wrestling with one's conscience and making difficult decisions goes with being an adult.
