Academia has concluded that shorting is primarily performed by professionals or "experts". Moreover, whenever short interest increases above 10%, that should be a warning sign to anyone who is thinking about initiating a position in a stock.

We've already looked at the academic studies on this thread. They show no insight by these so called experts. The great proliferation of hedge funds the last few years has made shorting more of a mainstream activity, but to call this new trend-following herd "professional" or "expert" is comical. I consider them the perfect contrary indicator due to their short-term focus and technical analysis based decisions. If you imagine some group of well-informed, astute fundamental analysts behind the majority of short selling, you are just imagining.
