Yes, hydrogen is a lot more practical than most people realize. It doesn't necessarily have to be carried in potentially dangerous storage tanks on board a car or truck. There are inert substances that can store hydrogen safely, so it can be used on demand as necessary. There are plenty of ways to deliver hydrogen safely to a fuel cell or hydrogen based engine.

I'll tell you one thing. If some catastrophe happened and the world suddenly had 5 years worth of oil supplies left, you bet your ass, all of a sudden electrics, hydrogen/fuel cells, biofuels, etc. would be there to replace the transportation infrastructure that is now provided by oil. There's no way they're going to just let the world economy collapse for lack of energy. We'd soon forget any reservations we had about using hydrogen if we were forced to use it. It's not like gasoline is all that safe of a substance either, but we don't hesitate to use it.
