Therefore we should do everything possible to encourage marriage, and discourage out of wedlock births.

I just had an odd thought. We've been reading a lot lately about the alleged problems of declining birth rates. Discouraging out of wedlock births could very well discourage births. Just some butterfly wings flitting by me.

He comes at it from the "what is the best way to protect the raising of children in our society?"

That's the way most people argue it, at least the ones I've argued it with on SI. I agree that's the best approacht. Mention kiddies and everyone goes all gooey.

His answer to the "marriage is broken anyway" argument is that cars kill a lot of people, but we don't get rid of them, we make them better.

I've tried arguing that here. No one seems to have any workable ideas for making marriage better.
