Mark,

"What exactly in your opinion is it progressing to? "

It is progressing towards the most cost efficient way of delivering goods to the consumer. Progress will always look for more efficient ways to do things. How do you feel about internet shopping? That is another threat to local merchants. All things will naturally progress towards lower cost ways of doing things.

Now - some things will be niches. There will be convenience stores - stores that trade convenience for price. There will be specialty stores - stores that offer specialty low volume items at a high price - because purchasers are not driven by price.

However, commodities materials will move that way.

For instance, should we outlaw self pump gas stations? Think about it. We could probably put several hundred thousand people to work pumping gas - at a higher price. Do you support that?
