What I want is to see some study comparing two parent families without a marriage certificate vs two parent families with a marriage certificate in terms of their success rate raising children.

That misses the point, IMO. The situation you describe above should result in the same success in raising children. But I think the long term "cohabit" relationship for raising children exists only in antidotal cases. There aren't enough of them around to bother gathering stats.

The point is that marriage has the best chance of producing a two parent situation for raising children.
