China to Issue High-Speed Mobile Licenses in 2005, Analysts Say
2004-6-28

China, the world¡®s biggest cell-phone market by users, may issue its first licenses for high-speed mobile services next year, to boost competition for China Mobile Communications Corp. and China Unicom Ltd. before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, analysts and equipment makers said.
``China is probably going to issue licenses in the first half of next year,¡®¡® said Terry Cheng, 52, Asia president of Texas Instruments Inc., the world¡®s largest maker of handset chips, in an interview. ``Operators will need time to build their infrastructure to prepare for the 2008 Olympics.¡®¡®

China may add licenses using so-called third-generation, or 3G systems to squeeze more calls on existing channels and avoid reallocating government or military airwaves, said analyst Bertrand Bidaud. Earlier adopters of 3G such as Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong used the technology to offer more services, such as faster e-mail, video, games and music.

The operators will spend about 60 billion yuan ($7.2 billion) to set up networks in China by 2008, said Marvin Lo, an analyst with BNP Paribas Peregrine Securities in Hong. The companies will jointly pay about 1 billion yuan next year to start trial services, he said.
