So it only takes 20-30 seconds to have your head sawed off and die. I'd guess those seconds amount to more pain and terror than the average person has in his life.

All I know about neck slicing I learned from watching TV. When you slit someone's throat, you get pretty quickly to the jugular unless you have a very dull knife. You'd bleed out in seconds. I assume they start cutting from the front. That's the logical way to do it. I didn't look at any of the pictures of the beheadings. The only other beheadings I know of used a guillotine or an ax, which are also very quick. From the perspective of pain, there would seem to be a lot worse ways to go than having your throat slit. The terror perspective may be another matter.
