NEWS SUMMARY - THE NOTE

What better way to remind everyone in politics and political journalism that the best-laid plans to shape the news cycle can be overthrown by wacky and unexpected international events!!!

What to look for next, away from all the oxygen being sucked to Peter, Tom, and Dan in Baghdad:
-- the Kerry campaign and other Democrats try to figure out how to adjust those big planning wall calendars
--"Fahrenheit 9/11" expansion to more screens and figuring out who is in the audience
-- the expected interest rate hike
-- politically potent Supreme Court cases
-- Kerry veepstake machinations

President Bush opens the NATO summit in Istanbul and Sen. Kerry calls into the Nurses Association and B'Nai B'rith conferences before raising money in Baltimore. Will the Kerry campaign keep its planned message of the day — that President Bush is neglecting national parks? Tonight, MoveOn.org hosts house parties into which Michael Moore is expected to call.

Tomorrow, Bush remains in Istanbul. Senator Kerry attends the Rainbow/PUSH conference in Chicago and speaks at the National Council of La Raza conference in Phoenix. Republican National Convention CEO Bill Harris and Bush-Cheney '04 Campaign Manager speak at the New York Press Club.

On Wednesday, the original Iraqi handover date, both President Bush and Sen. Kerry are down (in Washington and Pittsburgh, respectively). The Fed is expected to raise interest rates in an afternoon announcement.

On Thursday, President Bush commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the White House.

On Friday, the Labor Department releases state-by-state jobs numbers for June at 8:30 am, and President Bush has planned 10:55 am remarks on the economy from the White House.
