If we lose 10,000 soldiers, spend $300,000,000,000, make the entire Middle East more unsafe for us, witness a civil war in Iraq, and end up pulling out with our tails between our legs, will this war have been worth it?

I would agree that at times factors occurring after the start of the war must be considered -- and all of the above items will dictate changes to strategy and to tactics as the war progresses.

But public opinion isn't one of those factors. Public opinion, and LBJ's failure to act for fear of it, played a major role in the deaths of 58,300 Americans in Vietnam. Did we not learn anything?
