I finally reached a point where it began to appear to me that my pacifism was merely a way of trying to preserve personal purity, allowing evil to flourish unopposed.

I suspect that to move from a doctrine of "pacifism," to "war is the answer in most cases when threatened," says more about extremism than it does about intellectualism.

Many people who adopt extreme positions which they later perceive as untenable, later move 180 degrees to the other side. Once there they are, once again, in untenable territory; they just haven't yet come to realize it.

The key is to stop overcorrecting and try to stay on the road that leads between the ditches as opposed to spinning out of control.
