<So the real answer is to prevent these people from getting into positions of power so we can avoid the messy problem of killing them to get them out of power>
True. But the scary part is that they are not some separate entity in isolation. They are us; a reflection of the attitudes in a big enough part of the community which just loves to shout sieg heil and suppress or kill those seen as outsiders, be they Jews, negroes, homosexuals, religious wacos, women, children, old people, sick people, short people, tall people, men, intellectuals, gypsies, aborigines, tutsi, or whatever aspect of identity sets people apart from the tribalistic territorial cargo cult dominance hierarchy.
As Ghandi said, the line between good and evil is the line that runs right through the middle of each person's heart.
When the megalomaniacs take their first steps to power is the time to stop them. All around the world, there are megalomaniacs who have taken a LOT more than a few steps to unbridled power. For the most part, democratic processes, age or other limitations nip them in the bud, but the drive is still there.
The problem for each of us is to find the balance between our own interests and those of everyone else. How much is enough? Who should decide? Where does somebody else's property start and mine end and what's my share of the commons to donate and to take?
Our whole biological history is to be on the take and reproduce because that's how our DNA stays in business. The more the better. Those drives lead us inevitably to conflict with others filling the same ecological niche.
The modern invention of creativity [biotelecosmictechdot.com, engineering, agriculture etc] and trading has enabled humans to move out of the old red in tooth and claw survival of the fittest in a perpetual battle for found wealth and property. Unfortunately, more than half the people in every community still have the old conceptual way of life entrenched in their brains as the dominant way of being. The rest of us are heavily imbued with it. Our home is our castle.
