too, I think it's more than that. People, especially unsophisticated people (who can be smart and nice and all that crap), want to believe in their leaders. That's why Vietnam took a decade to unwind. And why Nixon was reelected in a landslide AFTER Watergate was revealed in The Washington Post. I had a friend who used to rail at me, "Do you think there is any way Dick Nixon could be that stupid?" Uh, yeah. <G>
