I agree with you 100%. There is a creeping sense of entitlement in the U.S. that scares me. It's starting to become a normal part of the American psyche. There used to be a day when the largest portion of the American psyche was the will to be a fierce competitor. THAT along with our creativity is our competitive advantage.

It's hard to swallow for the tech workers though. Going from earning $100K to being unemployed or having to swallow a $60-70K salary must be somewhat humiliating. But that's life. I'll tell you that from where I sit, the one's who survived the axe remade themselves from senior coders into tech leads and offshore managers. That way they show the company that they are valuable apart from sitting in their cubes coding. So now, the tech leads/technical managers I work with participate heavily in large scale system design and code stubbing. Then they have a very tight code review process. That's how survivors are. They find a way to stay valuable even when the industry around them is changing making their old role less valuable.
