"A" is a negatory prefix- "a" theist means "not god" or "without God"- the atheist does not believe in God. "A" gnostic means not knowing- ergo the agnostic does not know whether there is a God or Gods, or not.( a-, meaning “without, not,” ) dictionary.reference.com* dictionary.reference.com* I am an agnostic, but get called an atheist quite frequently- I wish people more clearly understood the terms.
