Nadine, things are not "silly" just because you think they are silly. I don't happen to find you a particularly good arbiter of silliness.

I disagree that Saddam was clueless about the West. He played pretty well with the West for quite a while- review the history, and you will see this is so. I know it is easy for you to ignore data that does not fit your model, but you ARE ignoring some pretty significant data here. Did he take some risks? you bet. But the West failed to understand him, and his country, as much as (or more) than he failed to understand the West. The sad lack of planning, and total misunderstanding of the problems we would encounter in post "mission accomplished" Iraq, are proof of this. Do I think the West is totally non-astute? In some things, but not in others. Just like Saddam.

And speaking of being surrounded by yes men...

Mr. Bush comes to mind... (talk about unrealistic ideas!)
