It is a matter of national security. The one thing you have to realize is that neither party really is all that interested in national security. If they were, we would have gone on a crash program to end our oil dependence after the first Gulf War. Both parties are interested in continuing the lucrative oil and arms trades. Our dependence on Mid East oil ensures that both these powerful industries get plenty of business. I think that's the crux of the problem. There is no incentive for the major parties to actually solve a problem like energy dependence, even if there are sensible energy alternatives in 2004. Dry up a Trillion Dollar industry? I don't think so.
