Taxing is not the only solution. England taxes the hell out of gas (petrol) and people still drive over there (but a lot more them walk or take transit than in the U.S.). Unlike previous decades, we now have real alternatives to the petrol economy. Electric is good enough for a commuting/errands car. Biofuels can be used to offset our need for foreign oil. Hybrids could be expanded greatly. Even hydrogen/fuel cells could be introduced more quickly.

An indication that our "leaders" don't give a rats ass about our foreign oil dependence is the fact that they won't even pass a modest increase in fuel efficiency standards. The Dems proposed a 1% increase in fuel efficiency standards over the next 7 years last year during the height of the war hysteria, and the Republicans even shot down that very modest proposal. We haven't had gas milage standards since 1987. Even after the Gulf War we didn't reintroduce these standards. We've lost 2 MPGs since then. What a crock!
