Z,

>Much better than who?

Than Saddam

You have got to be kidding.

Who's to be sure? The government is already talking about delaying elections, and many ministers have been appointed by the U.S. to five-year terms. Are you familiar with the situation with Musharraf in Pakistan? He's supposed to be elected, but he just keeps extending his own term by referendum so he can "oversee the democracy." Dollars to donuts that happens in Iraq, especially if there are assassinations.

These countries are much tougher to manage, to govern. The civil society just needs to gain a critical mass, but it seems tough. Afghanistan is facing the same challenges. I don't know if you cought a story that some people (I don't know if they were civil workers or volunteers) were murdered in Afghanistan when they went to a remote province to register people to vote at the upcoming elections.

Also, remember what an artificial creation the Communist regimes were... the Czech Republic became Communist in what, 1950? The Arabs have possessed a violent brand of nationalism for hundreds of years, and it was only exacerbated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the European imperial establishments of bogus states held together by dictators. Besides, there are many more groups around to stir up trouble in and around Iraq.

Very true. Czechoslovakia was a democratic country from 1918 to 1948 (except the interuption during the war), so there were people who have experienced it who are still alive. But this was actually my point, that it will be very though in Iraq, and the expectations need to be adjusted to reflect that.
