Not at all. Remember, Saddam was closer to the rule than the exception in the Middle East. I'm not all that optimistic that we'll end up with any sort of consistent organized government in place in the long run, but if we do, I think it's much more likely to be a dictatorship than a democracy, and a successful dictator in a hodgepodge of ethnicities like Iraq is probably going to be pretty darned murderous. It was pretty unsettling a couple of days ago to hear the new Iraqi security minister saying that they'd be bringing security to the country once the Americans left because their values don't hold human rights in the same regard -- that's creepy.

>These countries are much tougher to manage, to govern. The civil society just needs to gain a critical mass, but it seems tough. Afghanistan is facing the same challenges. I don't know if you cought a story that some people (I don't know if they were civil workers or volunteers) were murdered in Afghanistan when they went to a remote province to register people to vote at the upcoming elections.

I know about that story -- why do you think Iraq will be any easier to manage?

>But this was actually my point, that it will be very though in Iraq, and the expectations need to be adjusted to reflect that.

I just have a hard time trusting the guys who gave us the expectation that this would be a cakewalk to dig us out of this mess.
