The largest daily in Washington state, the Seattle Times, has endorsed Nethercutt's proposal. Citizens of states with an Income Tax may deduct those taxes when they file their Federal taxes. A deduction that citizens who live in states without an Income Tax don't enjoy. He's taking a big risk, but it's proving popular with a lot of people.

NETHERCUTT: "I'm George Nethercutt and I approved this message."
ANNCR: "Do you know why the Internal Revenue Service loves Washington State?
Because you pay more federal income taxes than you should. Washington doesn't have a state income tax, but our sales taxes are much higher. And we can't deduct sales taxes on federal tax returns.
Taxpayers in other states can deduct their state income taxes. Congressman George Nethercutt has helped win House approval to change this unfair law.And that change could save every Washington taxpayer hundreds of dollars a year.
You can go to Nethercutt for Senate.com to find out how much you personally would save. One newspaper praised Nethercutt for taking a "leadership position" in the House. But now we need strong leadership in the US Senate.

George’s Sales Tax Relief Plan Real Leadership. Real Savings.
George Nethercutt’s Sales Tax Relief Plan George Nethercutt’s sales tax relief plan saves Washington taxpayers $488-541 million each year. This could save families who itemize on their federal returns an average of $519-$575 per itemized tax return filed.
An Unfair Tax System Efforts to simplify the federal tax code in the 1980s eliminated the sales tax deduction, unfairly penalizing taxpayers in states without income taxes, including Washington.
This unfair tax burden penalizes Washington taxpayers as much as $500 million a year – money that our state could invest in schools and businesses.
Taking the fight to the Senate After 18 years, the House of Representatives has passed Sales Tax Relief.
Now, the Senate must act.
To get sales tax relief through the Senate, we need a strong leader like George Nethercutt.
George Nethercutt’s Fight for Sales Tax Relief For years, George Nethercutt has worked to win sales tax relief for Washington taxpayers. In 2001, George co-sponsored legislation with Rep. Brian Baird to permit a sales tax deduction. While that legislation failed to come to the floor for a vote, George did not give up and co-sponsored a sales tax relief bill with Rep. Robert Brady in February, 2003.
Behind the scenes, George lobbied Congressional leaders to pass the bill, sending a letter to Majority Leader DeLay and Chairman Bill Thomas asking them to include sales tax relief in a bill to expand the Child Tax Credit.
This year, the ideal vehicle for sales tax relief was introduced in Congress – the new American Jobs bill (FSC/ETI). In March 2004, George sent a letter asking Congressional leaders to include sales tax relief the FSC/ETI bill.
Two months later, on May 12, 2004, George told the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee that he would only support FSC/ETI if it included sales tax relief.
After years of hard work, House leaders told George on May 20 that the Nethercutt sales tax relief would be included in H.R. 4520, American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 (introduced on June 4, 2004).
The final bill passed the House on June 17 by a vote of 251-178. Although 48 Democrats supported the bill, Washington State’s six Democratic representatives all voted “no”. |
