Is it evil to send US troops to fight in Iraq ? With the chance they may be killed.

If so, then is it evil to send firemen into action each day, to send policemen to arrest or kill armed villians every day, to move a factory 50 miles and subject the workers to much more risk in commuting?

The firemen don't start the fires. The police don't start the crime. And unlike our soldiers currently, the police and firemen are allowed to quit if they choose.

We started Iraq.

Is the US an evil empire? That should be judged as to whether our efforts are beneficial long term to all humanity

Once again, the end justifies the means? Every dictator in history with his sights on world conquest would say that his efforts were "beneficial in the long term."

We intend to make certain the common Iraqi citizens get a chance to vote on their new government

They're going to be just like us, whether they like it or not. What if we don't like the results of their elections? What if al-Sadr gets elected president? What if they hold a referendum and declare that all Americans should leave?

The US wants a puppet government with a facade of legitimacy. Iraq can have freedom, except when that freedom becomes inconvenient for the US.

The argument of "end justifies means" is a downward spiral of compromising morality. Maybe this is another way in which "the road to hell is paved with good intentions."
