Dear Tom, We had our hand picked dictator in place in the South. The problem was Uncle Ho was angry we wouldn't help him keep the French out after WWII so he did it himself. The south was "under control" , but Ho who was first and foremost in MHO a nationalist wouldn't have any part of a divide Vietnam. The Vietnamese hated the Chinese. The were occupied by them for what... 400 years or more. I think Ho went "Communist" because they supported his drive to unite the two halves of the country.
