Campaign finance complaint filed against Schumer
A state Republican leader accused Charles Schumer, D-NY, of using taxpayer money to pay for political travel.

Republican state chairman Alexander Treadwell filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission and Senate Ethics Committee.

Schumer's campaign committee last week reimbursed the federal government $19,000 after his Republican challenger, Howard Mills, questioned the travel arrangements. Schumer's spokesman blamed the problem on accounting errors.

Treadwell said Schumer's actions amounted to a violation of federal law. He said Schumer repeatedly charged taxpayers for chartered planes to fly him to political or fundraising events.

Schumer spokesman Blake Zeff said Tuesday: "We have already stated that these are unintentional accounting errors totaling less than 4 percent of our travel budget, and that we undertook a review, found the errors, made them public, and made full reimbursement. We have taken steps to ensure that this will not happen again."
