Yes, LBJ escalated it, as did Kennedy, as did Eisenhower. The difference is that when Nixon was President, the public opposed the war. Not just a few hippies, but even most of the elite who run the country, who realized that it was futile and a waste of money. Nixon just couldn't accept that. He had to expand the war to Cambodia and Laos.

Ok, I can agree with that. But what did you want him to do? Take a poll and if the opposition tips over 50% withdraw all the troops? He tried to successfully complete the original goals and de-escalate, which didn't work in the end anyway.
