Z, While I'm not sure that this particular measurement is the right one, it makes sense to know when the average person in the country isn't doing as well as the statistics show he might be. Mark Twain once said there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. The "misery index" fits perfectly into Twain's third level of lies. Of course people are concerned about unemployment, tuition costs, health care, etc., but the attempt to create and/or exploit such a "misery index" is pure manipulation of people's genuine hardships.
