How was it known ahead of time, in JFK years, that it would take half a million US soldiers in Vietnam, and even that would fall short?
And yet, after knowing it, the administration sold this war as a cakewalk. Despite the fact that many people, including some in the hub of the administration, were saying that this would be a mess. What does it tell you about the competence or integrity of the people in charge?
And, BTW, there was exactly zero probability that the UN would ever agree to Kosovo war, which is why Clinton went around UN (which is what Bush should have done).
You are really oversimplifying...the only nation opposed to Kosovo UN involvement was Russia, because of the blood brother relationship with Serbia. Even Russia, after an initial show of force in Pristina, in the end cooperated with NATO. If you understood the Kosovo conflict better, you would realize that Clinton took some bold action there.
We can, but often the reality is very far from the estimate.
The reality in Iraq was indeed very far from the estimates of flowers and sreet dancing....thanks to the criminals (or idiots) in the Pentagon, the veep and a very incompetent president.
