I was (and still am) conservative. I don't think my definition of conservative matches well with the modern one. Generally, most of my values have to do with conserving things:

It's conservative to conserve the environment
It's conservative to promote energy independence
It's conservative to not give whole new powers to the Executive
It's conservative to want to keep America out of unnecessary wars
It's conservative to not spend money you don't have
It's conservative to promote "states rights" so we have a place to hide
It's conservative to maintain a high wall between church and state.
It's conservative to make sure when people vote, it counts.

We have funny definitions of conservative these days where any imprudent thing you can think of gets called conservative. It's too bad really. The only area where I'm actually that "liberal" is socially, but only by convention, because:

It's conservative to allow people to choose for themselves because one day, the rest of us might need that choice ourselves.

It's a good word, but meaningless in the modern political landscape.
