Hey Search... things might not be as bad as all that.
Most likely, we will retain a Republican dominated Congress.
Perhaps, with the opposition in the WH, we will have a situation similar to the Clinton period after Gingrich swept the Republicans into control... and we got the first serious attempts at controlling the deficit we'd seen in years. (I estimate that Republicans in Congress will 'regain their souls' and quit being such over-spenders when they only control the Congress. Anyway, it couldn't be much worse then it is now.)
Neither side would be able to advance very far with their more radical agendas... only consensus policies could pass (the saving grace of divided government).
And --- if at heart you are a Republican --- you could at least take comfort in this: the next four years are apt to be particularly difficult... likely whomever sits in the WH, rightly or wrongly, will catch hell for the trouble that's coming in the economy with rising rates, out-of-control twin deficits, over valuation in the markets, foreign difficulties, and the looming 'demographic time bomb' in Medicare.
If Bush had a second term, all the blame for trouble would stick to him --- and Republicans might have trouble in national elections for a long time there after.
If Kerrey holds the office, believe you me, the Republicans will be 'loaded for bear' in '08. |
