What I am thinking about this holiday weekend is, "where are we now, with respect to Iraq?"

We have pretended to hand the country over, but we really haven't- since our soldiers will have to remain there, and if they don't, is anyone in any doubt as to what will happen? The resistance (which is obviously not interested in Saddam) is staying at the same levels, no matter how much we attack them (at least according to an article last week quoting the military.) The Kurds grow restive and Sadr is making nasty noises again. It was obvious his make nice attitude was just designed to lull everyone in to ignoring him for a little while- but this guy isn't going to turn in to a stalwart supporter of democracy. (But he is obviously a strong man waiting to happen.)

So what now?

Either the US stays, and "enforces" as much "peace" as it can ( and it is ridiculous to call that peace, I suppose what I ought to call it is an absence of armed conflict), or the US leaves, and the Iraqis do the best they can- which probably isn't going to be very good. Yikes. What a nasty situation we have now in Iraq- thank you Mr. Bush.
