HOUSE DEMOCRATS BARK AT BUSH ON THE GSES
Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee wrote a letter to President Bush this week, urging the Administration to ease its recent criticism of the GSEs. The group of Democrats argued that HUD’s new housing goals are overly focused on safety and soundness regulation, without enough concern for the GSE’s affordable housing mission.
They fear that the Bush Administration’s public disapproval of the government-sponsored enterprises is cultivating a negative opinion in the financial marketplace, which may effectively raise their cost of financing. The group’s appeal asks for a stronger push for the GSEs to do more by broadening their affordable housing efforts, while maintaining a balance with the Administration’s heightened regulation.
