Today's Washington Post has an article about recent research that shows that married couples and couples "living as married" are far more likely to vote Republican than singles. I was reading the print version so don't have a URL.

I would expect that people who are single by choice have a very different view of marriage than married people.

As for enduring couples - long standing marriages take on a life of their own, as institutions which are greater than the sum of the parts, sort of like starting a company or a non-governmental organization. You only have to do half the things that need to be done, so you can do more than you could by yourself. You free up each other's time to do more things, more complicated things, you can accumulate twice as much wealth. Economy of scale. At least, that's how it's supposed to work in theory.

Traditionally, children were wealth, too, because they'd work for you when they were young, and take care of you when you were old. That still works for some, even today.
