Today's Washington Post has an article about recent research that shows that married couples and couples "living as married" are far more likely to vote Republican than singles.

As for enduring couples - long standing marriages take on a life of their own, as institutions which are greater than the sum of the parts...

You argue my side with both of those points.

The first is that married couples and couples living as married are not different, ergo a marriage certificate doesn't matter.

The second is that couples can and do do exactly that without going through a marriage ceremony. Substitute the word "relationship" for "marriage" and the paragraph still works, ergo a marriage certificate doesn't matter.
