week 4: copyright, intellectual property, and peer-to-peer file sharing

...Digital Rights Management

questions to consider:
-what is the legal definition of intellectual property? How it has worked in the past? Can it work on the Internet?
-When we look at P2P independent of the law, how does this differ from the way you currently understand the Internet? What are the current arguments against P2P? To what do they object and why?
-What makes copyright problematic when applied to the Internet? Do characteristics of the Internet make copyright protection impossible or unrealistic? Is this a good or a bad thing?
-Is a "new public idea" of intellectual property emerging on the Internet? Are Larry Lessig and others, like the Creative Commons organization, really making a difference in the way people understand intellectual property? How is this public understanding different from legal understanding? Will this public understanding actually make change?
-Who is benefiting from the use of peer-to-peer networks? Who is against it? What are these various stakeholders fighting for?
