Mike, check with your local recruiter, if you have only a GED there are limited quotas available, those quota´s also need to meet certain testing criteria to be acceptable.

Many people in the Army for 3-4 years don´t all operate computers or other high tech devices, some just stand around with a rifle (without toruturing them), and guard prisoners. Some just cook food, and a host of other tasks necessary to run a military machine.

Intelligent people are always preferable, but there is a law of diminishing return which operates here. It would probably be great if every enlisted person had a Masters degree, but we have to deal with reality.

I personally know many, many bright people who came into the service with a 10 year education at best and never had their GED. Only to have earned it years later. Many of these people fill our master Chief roles in the service today.

Education is a lifelong commitment, some young people don´t get until in their twenties or thirties. It doesn´t necessarily mean they won´t be able to operate battlefield communications gear, much of which is getting less complicated rather than more complicated to operate.

I know a person who scored a 1450 on his SAT and never went past the 9th grade in formal education. It happens, and the services should be flexible enough to allow these people an opportunity to serve.

Mike
