That reply would only work if the army of occupation was engaged in a similar mission. If you think the US army in Japan (or Germany or SK) can be compared to the army in Iraq, then by all means continue- but I do not think you can compare them. The armies were not doing similar things EVEN at comparable times in their relative occupations. There were no real instances of violence against US troops in Germany and Japan (and I produced quite a nice little paper on this, you might want to read it).

The US army is an army which is engaged in the pacification of a civilian population larded with terrorist elements, which is unlike any duty the army had to do after WWII in Germany and Japan. If the US army were to leave, are we in any doubt as to what would happen to Iraq? So who is really in control? Sad, but true.
