Yes, we managed to restrain ourselves well enough until the Louisiana Purchase, which is one reason I am dubious that the issue had the salience you claim.

It would have been tacky to take assistance from the French and then immediately turn around and steal their land.

I don't think one can claim any one event as the deciding factor. Whether it's the Stamp Tax, the western migration, the Quebec Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, etc...they collectively bound the colonies. Western migration may not been of import to Boston, but it was important to Georgia.

There does appear to be a common theme among many of them. The "oppression" was primarily directed towards the wealthy and corporate interests.

I was referring to the French failure to establish immigration from the British colonies.

That's what kicked off the French and Indian Wars. Virginia claimed French land in the Ohio valley and the French weren't keen on the immigration.
