The woman probably had such a long record that she could not cut a reasonable deal with the prosecutor, so the hope was that the jury would be more lenient.

Based on the judge's instructions on entrapment and in the questioning of the lead cop, I believe that what was going on was that the county wanted to make an example of her and thought the particulars would outrage the jury, which it definitely did. You could tell that both sides knew it would the way they and the judge tiptoed around. Anyway, the cops had apparently put a program in place to head off prostitution that was beginning to get a foothold by taking a tough stand and getting a conspicuous victory. Maybe it goes with the territory for vice cops but that lead cop was so sleazy that I'd have preferred the defendant as a neighbor. I doubt anyone cut her any slack.

The jury deliberations took a week and I was exhausted. It had never occurred to me that people could look at things so differently. It didn't help that I got stuck on another half dozen juries over a period of just a couple of years. I'm burned out as a juror. I got called again last year and when I was interviewed I sounded so jaded that I wouldn't be surprised if both sides struck me. <g>

Now that I think back, it was more like twenty five years ago.
