You know I used to believe that. I'm not so sure any longer. I would agree the NRA was that powerful if they had a lot more members. NRA membership dues in any year are $25. That means they take in a minimum of $100M and they still have to put out and mail a magazine 12 times year to 4 million people. They host charities, shooting competitions, have advertising costs. They send out a LOT of literature. The NRA has more power as a media outlet which is a recent innovation thanks to the Campaign Finance Reform Act rather than as a political contributor. The NRA gets credit and the heat most of the time when really small local grassroots or smaller Sportsman, Taxidermy, and Gun Rights Groups collectively have more power. Do an internet search and you will discover thousands of pro gun sites unaffiliated with the NRA.
