The McCarthy era refers to the period when the rightwing wanted to root out communists and suspected communists as well as their sympathizers from American society. This was driven by the hysteria of the Cold War including a lot of disinformation, scare tactics and paranoia. Yes the Soviets were a threat but the rightwing made it seem like there was a red hiding behind every tree.

They focused on the arts. They focused on Hollywood. Reagan was one of their top facilitators in Hollywood. He helped ruin the lives of many innocent Americans who just happened to be liberals. The neo McCarthyism lives in the hearts of the Newsmax and Anne Coulter types. They are all for rooting out liberals and persecuting them a la McCarthy. In fact Coulter devotes part of her last book to a revisionist history about how McCarthy was right.

Rightwing maybe, but un-American and wrong.
