Hi Bob,

My wife and I spent this past weekend in Las Vegas. Uneventful, meaning we didn't cash out anything huge. Some small wins along the way to defray costs, but overall we lost.

You might be interested in hearing that on July 2nd (late Friday afternoon), the Imperial Palace had a fire. The fire department had extinguished it before we ever arrived in Vegas, but it was the chief topic of discussion for the cabbies and other local service people.

We were told that the fire was in an elevator, and that a fairly good sized area of the IP, from the 3rd floor to the 5th floor suffered smoke damage, and some water damage. There were no deaths or injuries. That was the good news.

The bad news was that apparently the smoke alarms malfunctioned or something like that, because the guests and casino patrons had no idea that there was a fire up there. No alarms sounded. No automatic evacuation of the building. And customers & guests were streaming into the facility even as the fire department was arriving to contend with the fire. The fire officials and hotel employees had to spread word of the fire by mouth, and whatever evacuation happened was haphazard at best. Apparently the fire department folks were quite PO'ed about the incident, and apparently there will be some kind of investigation.

The cabbies said there was about 1/2 a million dollars in damages. We didn't actually see it ourselves, but we did hear about it from a number of locals. Snarled traffic on the Strip for several hours. I have no idea whether or not they reopened for the holiday weekend or not.
