is this the fleckenstein of the oil biz? i have not been exposed to bill powers' views, but if he is right russia's oil business will have an extended off season. i take a different view that may be naive or just plain ignorant of russian intrigue. the premise is that putin can't be this stupid and isn't being pushed by advisors who are totally oil-stupid. i think putin does want to nationalize at least yukos, but i think he then wants to sell a significant percentage to a western oil company, e.g., xom, with xom having contractural operating rights over the company. that would give putin and xom what they both want. putin would get an adoring russian population, lots of money for russian people (and putin, et al), and control of russia's oil. xom would get lots and lots of oil plus lots of profit.
