After the fall of the Soviet Union, when it became apparent the Russians weren't coming anymore, the country decided to split into 2 countries and did so peacefully. In addition, numerous countries were split out of the old Soviet Union, including Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Heorgia, and the Ukraine.
