If the CO:nicotine ratio was higher, people wouldn't smoke at all. They'd go purple and cold and barely get a nicotine hit. The incentive to smoke would be near zero. Lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases [other cancers, vitamin depletion etc] would diminish dramatically. People smoke because the short term benefits exceed the short term costs. If the short term benefits reduced and the short term costs increased, there would be less of it. Already, people can only smoke about a pack a day without suffocating. Only about quarter of the population can do it and get sufficient benefit to justify the costs. Smoking is on a cusp. An increase in costs, such as increased C0, would perhaps flip the cost:benefit ratio and make smoking only for the really determined. A few genetic freaks with CO resistant haemoglobin, who can cope with the lack of oxygen carrying capacity. Mqurice PS: I don't really think we can get CO2 levels up enough to be a problem for normal human breathing to notice a difference. The variation in altitude and air pressure in the human habit makes a bigger difference. Sitting in a sealed room makes a bigger difference.
