My guess is that comment about Americans and dumbness is most likely about our willingness to vote for Bush in 2000.

As I recall, his comments included the fact that Americans score so poorly on knowledge tests compared to other countries, which is true.

I'm not sure the point here is so much the truth of what he said as the fact that he was berating his countrymen in Europe. Even if you think his criticisms have basis, there's something untoward about airing dirty laundry, particularly as vociferously as he does. If your criticisms are constructive, then you speak in your indoor voice and address them to the parties being criticized. If you go out of your way to badmouth your countrymen to strangers, well, it's hard to take that well. Even if you think your countrymen are idiots for falling for the Bush line or scoring poorly on math tests, and even if you recognize that he's trying to sell a book, that doesn't go down well.
