Andrew,
NBC poll had Edwards beating Cheney handily as the man the american people would want as president if the then president died. McCain would be the best of the three viable republican alternatives. I have thought about this alot. Think Powell and Giulianis liberalism on social issues might be a problem. D'Amato thinks Powell will get Bush enough black votes to win some contested states. I am not sure but that could be offset by whites not ready for a black in the WH. It would be a bold choice and would give a much needed message re: fp that could negate some of the Kerry "lets make love to the french" appeal.
I dont see any problems with McCain except he might cost bush DMA's vote. McCain and Powell have gravitas as well and will appear much larger than edwards. Rudy has no fp experience. He should really replace Ashcraft at Justice. Mike
