I agree with you with regard to the betrayal of the Hungarian people by the US in 1956.

Some Hungarian friends of mine (now in their early 70s) recall that initially the US encouraged the Hungarians to rebel against the Soviets but "reneged" on its tacit promise to render aid to ensure the success of their uprising. To them this was a betrayal of the nth degree and is a disgrace and black mark against the US. To be sure, Uncle Sam was not a nice guy where Hungary was concerned.

My Hungarian friends also noted that the US was very "ugly" in Central America and South America. There the US set up puppet regimes which overthrew popularly elected leftist governments. The US did this because it overrated the capabilities of the USSR during the Cold War and was afraid the leftist governments might fall into the Soviet sphere of influence as Cuba did. Unfortunately, lots of folks suffered greatly and/or were killed by the US-backed puppet regimes. To illustrate: Nicaragua was destroyed economically........ Allende was murdered, & etc & etc.
