AFAIK, Turkey is a land geographically from Minor Asia, while Russia geographically is in Europe.
Israel feels isolated (already participating in the "Euro" sonf festival, waiting for more), and if Turkey joins Europe, why shouldn't Israel join also, and Libanon and Syria.
Another little remark: should Turkey be part of the Union, then the Union would have a common frontier with Iraq (and Iran, and Georgia, ...) Making troubles in the region a local affair. And as there is no structured defense in Europe, the NATO (51% US lead even after including the Vilnius countries) would be the force sent.
So, indeed, reshuffling its center of gravity, towards the Middle East oil fields and ruled by PNAC friendly leaders.
Nice play to put an US servant at the top, instead of stoopid politicians supporting a more integrated Europe: divide to reign.
Re: FIFA. For those who followed the use of soccer in politics, as for example the rivality between the Real (framcists) and the Barca (resistants) in Spain some questions araise: Greece (and arch-rival Turkey) will be in the spotlights this Summer.
